about

I know the quality of these tracks is pretty creaky...but hey...that's the glory of tape...
And I know some of the singing is pretty off the wall too..but I was going through a very experimental time... And i had help from a great musician friend Andy Ross who played lovely bits of guitar...notably on Indian Restaurant...this demo really clinched my deal with Rupert Hine... and led to an album on Island records... Andy also added guitar to On this plateaux and E.Y.O. (and he sings "It's a Government plot"..which still cracks me up)...and he also collaborated on "What about us"... The vocal idea on this was to create a unique language...possibly alien... And again the idea reappeared on "Who do these things belong to"

The rest of the music was all me..from dodgy drum machine (I wish I had kept it!)..bass guitar...Moog Prodigy, Casiotone, electric guitar and bits of record sampling... All recorded on a Teac 4 track tape recorder....

Ahhh...hold on...real drums on the rather commercial "Magazine man"....by my dear teenage pal Paul Cokayne.....
And a very distant b.v. on "What about us" by sadly missed Kevin Smith...a very talented artist and fine chap indeed...
And some other b.v's by Andy Ross....

Most of the songs were created and recorded at 252 Willesden lane, NW3..between 1980 and 1981....

Communication Complex and News speak were recorded at Aliwal road, Clapham Junction in 1982...
And there were more b.v contributions from one Nina 'Manufactured romance ' Spencer on News speak....the song was meant to appear on my Island lp "Englishman abroad"...it did eventually when Voiceprint re-issued it in 2000.
"Magazine man" was recorded at Pathway studios (same place that Dire Straits recorded "Sultans of swing")

I hope there's something on here that people who like demos will enjoy....

I wish I could have mastered a couple of them... "Communication Complex" and "Call of the wild" are probably my favourite tracks...

Anyway....hope you like
