CHAIN SMOKING INSECTS © Martin Ansell 1. See those fields That's not mist That's chain smoking insects With a thousand yawns Antennae dawns Twitching as they pass the matches CH: Chain Smoking Insects Worrying about the crops Hope that the farmer loves you And the experiment stops 2. Green grasshopper Used to be so chirpy Now it's doubtful He'll see thirty When the sprayman comes Better fly or run Otherwise you'll be blown away CH: Chain Smoking Insects Worrying about the crops Hope that the farmer loves you And the experiment stops CH: Chain Smoking Insects Chewing an unknown stack Bless the digestive system Pray they never pack up

The Settler 02:57
THE SETTLER © Martin Ansell 1. There was a young girl with lively Ideas in her head like birdwings All fluttering round the eaves and She couldn't keep still for an evening 2. The boys that she drew were humble Enough with their clothes on the floor But behind a door came a mumble And a stumble and tumbling laughing CH: Just settle down, just settle down Just settle down she said to them Just settle down, just settle down Once settled down she drew them in 3. The villagers whispered about her And some of the boys went round there To find that their friends weren't missing But dangling from her fingers 4. Once in her room white and naked Nobody cared what she painted Her beauty was so surrounding Their hearts and their souls weren't grounded CH: Just settle down, just settle down Just settle down she said to them Just settle down, just settle down Once settled down she drew them in 5. Then one of them fell deep in love That painting was not good enough He said that the colours weren't right Unless he was holding her tight 6. They followed the streams and hedges She studied him at the edges Then something inside was shifted Her spirit ran wild and lifted CH: Just settle down, just settle down Just settle down she said to them Just settle down, just settle down Once settled down she drew them in 7. She was a young girl once again Ideas in her head like birdwings All fluttering round the eaves and She couldn't keep still for an evening CH: Just settle down, just settle down Just settle down she said to them Just settle down, just settle down Once settled down she drew them in

FOREST OF JEANS © Martin Ansell 1. I was walking in a forest of jeans I wasn't scared, it wasn't dark But there were so many labels I just had to stop For some coffee I was walking in a forest of jeans I was feeling confused, it was a moment My daughter could have used She could've had the biggest flares in the world They looked like sails to me They were sails setting sail In a forest of jeans So let the fashion sail round the world Don't let the passion die out of it.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE WOODEN MAN? © Martin Ansell 1. They came down from the sky Like ghosts haunting a tomb They peck and scratch at me And there's nothing I can do I just stand and I dream And sometimes I get so far away And the mossy green covers me And you can hardly see the grain CH. Whatever happened to the wooden man? Did he just get up and walk away? Whatever happened to the wooden man? Did he just go back to the woods again? 2. They came out of nowhere And they lifted my up high Lay me down on a big truck And they said "We're going for a drive" CH. Whatever happened to the wooden man? Did he just get up and walk away? Whatever happened to the wooden man? Did he just go back to the woods again?

Handmade 03:31
HANDMADE © Martin Ansell 1. There was a man who was afraid Of everything handmade He said that most things come out of machines And that's the best way of keeping things clean Inside machines it's safe and clean 2. He had a wife wrapped up in clingfilm Most of the time she looked quite ill But she did not like things touching her skin Except for plastic that's extremely thin Touching her skin, extremely thin CH. All the pain in this man's life's handmade, yeah 3. They had a dog who was self conscious Of everthing it had to do They had to take him out into the park And turn their backs on what he had to do He ran away but left a clue CH. All the pain in this dog's life's handmade, yeah CH. All the pain in the man's life's handmade yeah

LOST AFTERNOON © Martin Ansell 1. Bubble blowing boy on the banks Of a long lost afternoon In the distance church bells rang Blow the biggest one you can do CH. One moment they're living Then they're lost to the wind 2. On a gravestone I would play Harmonica till my lip bled If a stranger came a bit close The spell of the tune broke like a thread CH. One moment they're living Then they're lost to the wind Has anyone Has anyone seen my long lost afternoon 3. In my mind I travel back there Like I could kiss yesterday Bet you wonder what did you wear And I'm wonderin' what did I say CH. One moment we're living Then we're lost to the wind

Track Of The Moon On The Water © Martin Ansell, 2012 1. There is never enough time in the day anymore I don't worry, I don't run I settle myself down and I gaze from a shore Life looks simple like the sun Oh and the innocence in me I'm caught and tied and captivated until CH. The track of the moon on the water dazzles me She's clever enough, enough to know my mood I rock and I sway and rise To feel her quickening The ballad of love is soft and gently moved 2. There is something about light That changes spirits Lifts you up lets you go And the romances of night May the moon fill it With only things that lovers know Oh when the innocence in me Is lost to arms that pull me closer still CH. The track of the moon on the water dazzles me She's clever enough, enough to know my mood I rock and I sway and rise To feel her quickening The ballad of love is soft and gently moved

The Hill 04:59
THE HILL © Martin Ansell 1. Midnight mist from the heart of strange woods Cloud like fists and vapour trails Dawn will find you softly lying A perfect lid for for a world turned pale CH. When all the words are silent All is calm and still A painter shades away the night And the sun is coming over The sun is coming over The sun is coming over the hill 2. Lovers turn in sweet dreams of ardour Express trains of thought without the lines Of pain and trouble Waiting for a rainbow In this place there's always time CH. When all the words are silent All is calm and still A painter shades away the night And the sun is coming over The sun is coming over Over the hill The sun is coming over The sun is coming over The sun is coming over Oh the sun is coming Can you feel it, can you feel it The sun is coming over The sun is coming over The sun is coming over Oh the sun is coming A plane, a bird, a dot on the skyline The sun is coming over the hill

about

Martin Ansell - Brief Biography

Born in Gillingham, Kent, raised on peanut butter and The Beatles, Martin played harmonica on the gravestone of St Mary's Church until a plastic guitar changed his life at the age of 8. "I fell in love with the acoustic guitar listening to Roy Harper, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen and all that happy stuff!"

In 1986 he was signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records and his album The Englishman Abroad, produced by Rupert Hine, with guests Howard Jones, Phil Palmer (Dire Straits) and Trevor Morais, was released. One of the tracks, Shine, was subsequently included in the film soundtrack of "Better off Dead" starring John Cusack and another, The Eighth Wonder, was a huge international success when covered by Miguel Bose.

Since then Martin's songs have been covered by both Sally Barker and The Poozies and he has toured Europe with Van Morrison, Chris Isaak, The Fixx and Tom Robinson, to name a few.

Martin’s subsequent partnership with Debbie Cassell in the duo Woman Wants Tall Man has led to two albums, 'Woman Wants Tall Man' and 'Best With The Head Off'.

His solo acoustic album 'June Said' is dedicated to his mum who died on September 30th 2006 from a brain tumour. Far from morose, it contains uplifting songs like 'Chain Smoking Insects' which stabs at GM crops and 'The Settler', a song about a young woman who paints naked men.
